Just time amidst packing to draw attention to Stephen Bates’ lengthy profile of Rowan Williams here. It makes for sad reading, but is probably an accurate summary of the current situation and of Williams’ own location within it. It goes to show that while churches think in theory that prayerful, holy Christian thinkers and teachers should lead the church, in practice they struggle to cope with the results. Paul himself would have failed in the eyes of those who, in the language of Martyn Percy in the article, want a man (always a man) of action, a CEO and strategist, rather than a pastor and teacher.
